Archipelago is an Atlantic architecture studio based in Madeira Island, Portugal.
This is a collective, composed of several architects from different backgrounds, convictions, and learnings. We understand that architecture is a collaborative process between people, disciplines, and knowledge.
It is from this collective interaction and participation that the necessary balance is generated for the design of an integrated and harmonious architecture.
The insularity of the geographic context where the studio is located imposes a strong influence on our working methodology.
This confrontation between territorial matrix — island (solid matter), ocean (liquid matter) — and human action, understood as overlays of temporal layers, is assumed as an essential tool for design and collaboration.
Our work is developed under the following pillars:
Geographical understanding
(orography, landscape)
historical understanding
History and local customs
programmatic understanding
(Space functionality)
